Background and Purpose of Creating the Sentence Cards |
I have been teaching at Japanese Language schools and universities since
1969 to students from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, ranging
from preschoolers to adults in their 70s. During this period, I have used
both commercially marketed and hand-made visual teaching materials. However,
in order to teach sentence structure using part-of-speech picture cards
and picture scene cards available to date, it was necessary to arrange
several different cards into a sentence. I had to spend a substantial amount
of preparation time in selecting and arranging the cards. It was here that
I thought of reducing the required preparation time by arranging my most
frequently-used cards to create basic example sentences with picture cards,
which focus on sentence structure. As a result, students are able to easily
change words to practice different sentences.

Use of the Sentence Cards |
The cards have been created using vocabulary from elementary level, Level-N5(former
Level-4) of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, but can also be used
for Level-N4(former Level-3) sentence structure practice. The cards have
been designed so that there is an ordered progression in the memorization
of each word, confirmation of sentence structure, sentence composition
and practical application, so that verb sentence structure is easily learnt.

Target Users |
A chart-style manual is included in which card content and
practice methods can be understood at a glance. The sentence cards can therefore
be used by children and adults, those just starting Japanese language study, and
of course those beginning to teach Japanese as well as experienced teachers who
wish to make more creative use of the cards.
